Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Paragonah, Utah. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing, where we excel in hair testing, with facilities in every major city Nationwide. It is typically necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head, though body hair may also be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other custom testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair testing instead of conventional urine tests. Entities with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation often employ hair follicle tests. One significant advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use for an extended period, typically up to 90 days. The collection process is observed, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests still prove to be the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair presents an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered adjacent to the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This consists of confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a preliminary positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a considerably reduced concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
