In Samak, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing with centers across the Nation. Hair tests can assess drug or alcohol use with 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Our tests can specifically check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized screening options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over conventional urine tests. This method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies and those overseeing probation. Hair tests provide a prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, are momentarily observed during collection, and offer a high resistance against tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair provides an extended record of alcohol and drug use. When procured near the scalp, it offers up to a three-month detection range for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg—ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG and higher panel tests beyond ten, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. Scalp hair refers specifically to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample in the lab system. This process checks the integrity of the sample's packaging and shipping, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and handles additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening gives a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptive positive samples during Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, hair undergoes drug extraction at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm positive screening outcomes. All presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredits to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug presence for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter ranges.
  • Hard to circumvent: The difficulty in falsifying hair drug tests leads to more dependable results.
  • Historical insight: It demonstrates a pattern of drug use rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to track recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
