Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Summit, Utah. Whether you're looking for a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing spans the nation with centers in every city equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary supervision often rely on them. The notable advantage lies in the longer detection window, up to 90 days, along with nearly impossible tampering or cheating during the observed collection process. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hairs (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, it's specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab for processing a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a lab's records. This process involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are removed from hair at much smaller concentrations than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug tests are one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot show recent drug use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
