Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Timpie, Utah. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing and operates testing centers in various cities across the country capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing strategies have increasingly included hair follicle drug assessments. Several employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are leaning towards hair drug testing over conventional urine testing. Such tests serve employers with strict non-drug use policies, judicial entities, and individuals under probation. Among the chief advantages of hair follicle drug testing is the extended drug use detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, plus the observed collection methodology which is hard to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended timeline of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can show substance use for up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In the laboratory, the four primary phases of processing a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This phase ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid test for abusive substances. Though a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples marked presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any presumptive-positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive-positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Deceptive difficulty: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can reflect a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
