Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Woodland Hills, Utah. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice for samples. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, the inclusion of hair follicle tests in drug screening has surged. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine assessments. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies prioritize hair follicle tests, as do courts and probation officers. The key advantage lies in its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, along with a secure collection process that is nearly infallible. However, for identifying recent drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section made up of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure is comprised of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary processing into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was secured and sent properly, allocating a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any remaining data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial quick assessment for drug presence. It serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive result must be confirmed to hold up in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at markedly lower levels than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the review of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) for Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe of detection.
  • Tamper resistance: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronic use insight: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent consumption: It takes an estimated 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individuals' hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle itself below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
