Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Cambridge, Vermont. If you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, with facilities across numerous cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair exams detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for various testing needs.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor this method over conventional urine analysis. It supports employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial cases, and probation scenarios. Its primary advantage is a substantially longer drug detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, administered through an observed process, almost eliminating the chance of tampering. Still, for checking drug consumption in the past five days, urine analysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) from close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for thorough screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10 tests, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This comprises confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for substance abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug consumption for most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive require further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original collection and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, substances are derived from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed as required before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for a period up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It can provide a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent usage: Drugs generally become evident in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variation can alter the metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cambridge, VT

When evaluating drug use, hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage over urine tests with superior detection accuracy. Hair testing provides a more extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days back, versus the shorter span of urine tests. This breadth allows for a comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance use history.

Moreover, the reliability of hair follicle tests surpasses traditional urine testing due to its resistance to tampering. The process ensures that collected samples reflect genuine substance intake, offering peace of mind and ensuring adherence to drug-free workplace policies. These attributes make hair testing the optimal choice for precise drug detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
