Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection range of about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.
A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If head hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory method for processing drug test outcomes includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening is a preliminary swift examination for abuse drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates further validation for court admittance. Any samples that give a presumptive positive during Screening need another layer of Confirmation.
If Screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.
Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to evaluations under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
