Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Guilford, Vermont. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, this company is a leader in hair testing with facilities available in numerous cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is typically necessary for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. This method is favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation often utilize hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage of this method is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, making it difficult to deceive due to its monitored collection process. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the fiber of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is ideal. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair only, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in lab processing of a drug test result involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This procedure confirms the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug usage. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any presumed positive samples need additional confirmation.

In the instance of a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is especially challenging.

Positive Screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are rinsed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Historical analysis: It delivers a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests often carry higher expenses compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
