In Newfane, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing centers spread nationwide to accommodate hair testing needs. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair is essential, but body hair can also suffice. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored substances.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug screening in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors are now favoring hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation programs. The main advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a longitudinal view of drug and alcohol history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches from approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the desired sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. The specimen should ideally be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is introduced into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that's not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary quick evaluation for drugs. While it's a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptability. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive from the screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are very difficult to evade, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: They can showcase a pattern of drug use over an extended timeline, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
