Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in North Westminster, Vermont. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with centers across all Nationwide cities to perform these tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation employ hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window, which generally spans up to 90 days, and is nearly impossible to manipulate compared to urine tests, which remain the most precise for recent 5-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by encasing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When samples are taken close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over ten, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent mass of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair involves all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, but a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs in this stage are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most demanding methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection times.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical patterns: It provides an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically need 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
