Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rockingham, Vermont. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing covers all bases, with centers available throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for the test, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists have shifted to hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict non-drug use policies and are utilized by courts and probation officers. These tests offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days through direct sample collection, providing a nearly uncheatable solution. However, for detecting very recent drug usage within the last five days, urine tests remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair reveals a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drug intake. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both initial tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a corresponding amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory consists of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This phase involves ensuring the sample has been sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry that an electronic chain of custody has not covered.

Screening is the phase where samples undergo an initial brief inspection for drug traces. Although Screening provides an economical means to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be considered valid in legal situations. Samples that test positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

In instances where samples test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug testing is a more complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage history up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: It’s extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: Offers insights into drug use trends over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
