In Shaftsbury, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. For those needing a drug or alcohol hair test, we provide specialized hair testing services. With centers across all cities Nationwide, we can facilitate hair sample analyses. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is required. Hair exams can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for conducting substance checks, often chosen by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Many employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation committees prefer this method. The key advantage of hair testing is its lengthy detection period—up to 90 days. Although ideal for observed collections and difficult to tamper with, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use screening within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The method of hair testing has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers in the strands’ fibers as they grow. When gathered adjacent to the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. When scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test lab process encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the laboratory system. This phase ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any outstanding data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug usage in most cases, a positive screen necessitates verification for legal acceptance. Any samples rendering a presumptive positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

If a presumptive positive emerges in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. At this point, drugs are retrieved from hair at substantially lower concentrations than with other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any affirmative Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Hair drug tests resist tampering, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical overview: It provides insights into the pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires nearly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Influences like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth may affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this testing analyzes the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
