Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in South Shaftsbury, Vermont. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing formats.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists favor hair testing over traditional urine analysis. This method is endorsed by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, court systems, and individuals under probationary supervision. Its primary advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, obtained through an observable collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. Conversely, for drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most accurate form.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximating the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test involves four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift preliminary check for substances of abuse. While cost-effective, Screening results in presumptive positives that require confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive results is conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicated as presumptive positives are washed as required. Each step of processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other types of drug tests.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual growth rates can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
