Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in West Brattleboro, Vermont. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers across the nation, including in every city, capable of executing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.
Recently, there has been an increased reliance on hair follicle testing over urine tests for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests for their stringent policies against drug use. The primary advantage lies in hair tests' extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days, collection method, and difficulty to tamper with. To accurately screen drug use within five days, urine tests remain more effective.

Hair testing stands out as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair analysis can capture up to a three-month overview of alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to gather, difficult to alter, and convenient to mail.
An ideal sample size for analysis and confirmation is a segment of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil), which provides 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is inadequate, a proportionate amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing for drug test outcomes encompasses four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, which involves verifying the sample's seal and shipment, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and updating any additional data not covered by an e-chain of custody.
Screening signifies an initial rapid assessment for substances that are abused. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use for most samples, a confirmed result is necessary for court admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.
If a sample appears to be positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, substances are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine, oral fluids), which renders hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.
Confirmation of any presumptive positive results involves the use of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples hinting at positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
