Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bowling Green, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing, with locations in all cities nationwide ready to perform these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is needed; however, body hair may be used as an alternative when necessary. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized options for hair testing.

Lately, the involvement of hair follicle drug tests has grown steadily in routine drug testing procedures. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug examinations cater to employers with stringent drug-free policies, judicial authorities, and probation settings. The key advantage of a hair test is its extended detection window, which usually reaches up to 90 days, adhering to an observed collection procedure, making it daunting to falsify. However, if recent drug activity within five days is of interest, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 strands (approximating the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a precision scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. Referring to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in many samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is among the most complex methods to execute.

Any positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably difficult to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: Provides a timeline of drug use that extends beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
