Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Christiansburg, Virginia. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide with centers in all cities that can conduct these tests. A typical requirement is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp, but body hair is also an option. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The trend of using hair follicle drug testing has risen as the preferred method over recent years. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals demand hair drug testing instead of traditional urine testing. Employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers prefer its longer detection time, which can reveal drug use for up to 90 days. This process, done under observation, is nearly foolproof against tampering. Yet, urine tests still provide the most precise results for drugs used within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair is recognized as an effective resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Hair captured near the scalp can reveal a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or extensive panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The testing in a lab for drug presence involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial setup into the lab's database. This step checks the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening assesses the presence of drugs initially. It's an economical method of confirming the absence of drug use for most samples; however, positive findings in Screening necessitate further validation for legal cases. Samples that test positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample is positive following Screening, an additional batch of hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair, requiring detection at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of a positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to circumvent: It's quite hard to evade a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: Offers a timeline of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Different factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
