Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cloverdale, Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities located in every city across the Nation capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body will suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailor-made hair testing options.

In recent times, there has been a rise in using hair follicle drug tests as a preferred testing method. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now choose hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The main advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it almost impossible to deceive. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can provide nearly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to procure, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, it means scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial management of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not given by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, though a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in court. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening do necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a lesser detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, providing more dependable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be perceptible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing procedures.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cloverdale, VA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several key aspects. The longer detection window of hair tests enables a more comprehensive substance use analysis, showcasing its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests analyze history extending up to 90 days.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle analyses offer a broader detection range, making them particularly effective in strict environments. This is essential for adhering to zero-tolerance policies, ensuring adherence and safety in workplaces and other sectors.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cloverdale, VA, offers an expansive detection window, capturing drug use over a three-month span. This extended timeframe provides employers a detailed view of a candidate or employee's substance history, facilitating informed decision-making.

The up-to-90-days detection capability of hair tests is valuable for understanding long-term substance use patterns. Employers benefit from insights into consistent behaviors, as opposed to only recent activities offered by shorter-window tests like urine analysis.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Cloverdale, VA, lies in its resistibility to tampering. By dramatically lowering the chance of sample adulteration, hair tests deliver unquestionable, reliable outcomes, offering peace of mind to employers and legal bodies.

Collection of hair samples is typically conducted under observation, making this test almost immune to the common manipulations seen with urine tests. The integrity in results ensures trust and confidence in critical assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
