Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing at Dunn Loring, Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair screenings and our nationwide centers, including those locally, ensure accessibility. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation cases frequently utilize hair follicle tests. Their major advantage is a longer detection window, generally up to 90 days. It's collected in a monitored process and is tough to manipulate. Yet, for substance detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can show results for up to roughly three months for the use of alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to mail.

A sample taken from 1.5 inches of hair, consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial and confirmation analysis. For testing EtG, additional analyses, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If head hair is not obtainable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in a laboratory's analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary integration into a lab's system. This step involves confirming whether the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any outstanding data entry tasks the electronic chain of custody system hasn't covered.

Screening represents an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use for the majority of samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be legally permissible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening demand further verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration level than in other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo a cleansing before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug testing is challenging to deceive, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It displays a drug usage trend over time, instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot show recent usage: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug testing generally incurs more cost than alternative testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
