At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide extensive hair follicle drug screening services throughout Fairfield, Virginia. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol tests, we are experts in this field, offering testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. The collected samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized substances.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted toward hair follicle analysis. This method is becoming the standard for employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals, who prefer it over urine testing. Its advantages include a lengthy detection window, typically up to 90 days, alongside observed collection and a resistance to tampering. Despite these benefits, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by incorporating biomarkers into the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can indicate substance presence for up to roughly a 90-day timeframe. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This phase involves ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial cursory examination for illicit drug presence. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen mandates validation for court admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary affirmation.

When a sample registers presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Affirmation of any positive screening outcome is pursued through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug utilization for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • Cheating difficulty: Evasion of a hair drug analysis is challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical use insights: It reveals a trajectory of drug utilization over time, instead of merely recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Recent use undetectability: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fairfield, VA, hair follicle tests are considered superior for their precision over more conventional urine tests. The key advantage lies in the extended detection period that hair testing provides, capturing a longer history of substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
