Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Chamberlayne Heights, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by our network of facilities across the United States, capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body, is necessary for testing. Analyzing hair can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has become more prevalent. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug testing as opposed to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored due to their longer detection timeline of up to 90 days, reliable observation during sample collection, and high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as a valuable means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by enclosing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 3-month timespan for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A typical 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp should yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used instead. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to any other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to disprove drug usage in a majority of cases, any positive findings must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair status and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more restricted detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: A hair drug test is very hard to falsify, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can display a trend of drug usage over an extended duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variances in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: As often denoted “hair follicle tests,” the analysis itself evaluates the hair shaft and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
