In Haymarket, VA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we have centers in cities throughout the country ready to conduct these tests. Generally, hair from the crown or body is used if it's 1.5 to 2 inches long. Our labs can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide various tailored hair testing solutions.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over traditional urine testing due to its advantages. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers due to their extensive detection period, lasting up to 90 days, and the almost impossible chance of tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through its fibers, the hair captures long-term biomarkers indicative of substance use. Collecting hair near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug usage within an estimated 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch hair segment, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. 'Head hair' refers explicitly to scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing for drug testing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample’s initial integration into a laboratory’s system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial check for drug abuse substances. It’s an affordable way to determine no drug usage in most samples; however, legal acceptance requires confirmation of positive results. Samples that present a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

On presumption of positivity after Screening, further hair is gathered from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis highly complex.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, meets both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect substances up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter timeframes.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating a hair test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides a drug usage timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent usage detection: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuation: Variables like hair color and individual growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Haymarket, VA is evident through their enhanced detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair tests cover a broader period, capturing substance use missed by short-term urine analyses. This ensures more comprehensive detection.

The reliability of hair follicle tests is unmatched, providing a robust alternative to urine testing. Urine tests may detect recent use, but hair testing surpasses this with longer detection periods, offering more insight and accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window is a notable advantage in Haymarket, VA, offering insights into drug use over 90 days. For employers, this is invaluable in assessing an individual's substance history, ensuring a thorough understanding.

With the extended detection period that hair testing provides, it's possible to track drug use far beyond traditional methods. Employers gain a comprehensive view of substance history, making informed decisions easier.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The Tamper-Resistant Testing Method offered through hair follicle tests in Haymarket, VA, significantly reduces sample adulteration risks. This method provides results that are both reliable and indisputable, crucial for maintaining test integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
