Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Innsbrook, Virginia. For those needing hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair tests and provide nationwide testing facilities. The standard requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors favor hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and probationers opt for this method. Its main advantage is extended drug detection up to 90 days, with direct collection minimizing tampering risks. However, urine tests remain most accurate for confirming recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as a formidable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as they grow, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, the analysis can offer up to a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from roughly 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for assessment and affirmation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or assessments exceeding 10-panel, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a precision jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be utilized. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a laboratory drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a specimen is integrated into the laboratory system. This step checks if the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and includes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides an economical approach for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results necessitate confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positive samples during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, further material is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction phase. This involves retrieving drugs from hair at comparatively lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before final confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair analysis can identify drug use up to 90 days earlier, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to falsify results of a hair drug test, ensuring high accuracy.
  • Reveals consumption patterns: It provides insights into chronic drug use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally involves higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigment and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
