Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mechanicsville, VA. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our centers nationwide are equipped to handle such needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other body parts are needed. Hair testing is versatile, assessing drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized tests.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained traction for drug tests. More entities like employers and courts now favor this over urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers commonly utilize it. The main advantage is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, with collection in a monitored setting, which minimizes chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Through embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and drug use. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

By taking a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, 100mg of hair can be obtained, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. In cases of EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample utilizing a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Procedure Summary

The four core stages in the laboratory processing of a substance analysis result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring correct sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances of misuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding the presence of drugs in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for them to be legally acceptable. Samples indicating positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower levels than those found in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Any positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results are cleansed pre-confirmation as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Substance Testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is considerably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Displays historical usage: It offers insight into drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair hue and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
