Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Marshall, Virginia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair tests, with facilities situated in every city across the country prepared to conduct such assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. These hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing services.

Lately, the approach to drug testing often involves hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now demand hair drug tests over the conventional urine method. Hair follicle exams are preferred by companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary services. A major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection window, spanning up to 90 days, which is collected under supervision and is very hard to deceive. Nevertheless, for drug usage evaluation within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a crucial method for detecting the usage of alcohol and narcotics. The fibers in the growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a detailed history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers about a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, specialized analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not supplied by an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for illicit substances. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive is necessary for legal proceedings. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening phase is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a profile of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variabilities: Elements like hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination analyzes the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
