Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Middleburg, Virginia. If you need to administer a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and testing centers nationwide that can conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other specialized hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing practices. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now require hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals benefit from hair tests. The key advantage of these tests is their extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days, conducted through observed collection, making them difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the best option for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers indicating drug and alcohol use, providing a long-term record by embedding these markers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window for drugs and alcohol spanning up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, it is not easy to tamper with, and it is simple to send off for analysis.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This phase ensures that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening economically aids in ruling out drug use for most samples, positive screenings require confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in urine or oral fluid methodologies, rendering hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection time frame.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: They offer an overview of drug usage trends over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Pricing: Hair drug tests usually entail higher costs as compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine testing, the former stands out due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer extended detection windows and make it more challenging for participants to cheat, unlike traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
