Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pearisburg, Virginia. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a hair testing expert and offers testing centers Nationwide with the capability to administer hair tests. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on your scalp or elsewhere for testing purposes. Hair tests can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other types of hair analysis.

In the past few years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increased for drug screening purposes. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use regulations, the courts, and probationary programs are increasingly favoring hair tests. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its ability to detect drug use for a much longer duration, up to 90 days, with collection under supervision, making it almost foolproof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-standing record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, extra assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental procedures in laboratory drug testing consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s database. This step includes checking that the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, assigning a distinctive LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, yet a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples that suggest positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are derivable from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any screening result indicating positivity is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that suggest positivity undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use patterns for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Reflects historical use: It provides a comprehensive overview of drug consumption over time, rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days to surface.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the scalp-located hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
