In Pennington Gap, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, we have locations across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, available from the head or body. Hair tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

The preference for hair follicle testing over urine has grown amongst employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. This test suits zero-tolerance drug policies due to its 90-day usage detection window, secure observation process, and difficulty to manipulate. However, urine testing remains optimal for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for detecting substance consumption, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures long-term substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can indicate usage over a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion, roughly the width of a #2 pencil and comprising about 200 hairs, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may suffice. Here, "head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" designates other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing workflow consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's integrity through proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry beyond what the electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening acts as a preliminary scan for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most cases, any positive results necessitate confirmation to be legally valid. Samples identified as potentially positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample undergoes Extraction. This process isolates drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair testing the most challenging.

Confirmed positive results are authenticated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positives receive pre-confirmation washing if needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which detect for much shorter.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage history: Unlike recent use detection, it chronicles substance use over time.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Such tests generally cost more than other drug-testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Testing vs. Urine Testing in Pennington Gap, VA
Hair follicle testing provides notable advantages over traditional urine tests. It offers superior detection accuracy, capturing a broader spectrum of substance use over a more extended period. In contrast, while urine tests can identify recent use, they lack the prolonged tracking capability of hair tests, making hair testing a more reliable choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Pennington Gap, VA
Hair follicle testing's ability to track drug use up to 90 days provides a significant advantage. This extended window ensures employers in Pennington Gap have a detailed view of an individual's substance history, surpassing the limitations of short-term testing methods. The method's thorough detection timeline supports careful hiring and monitoring processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
