Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rich Creek, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, with testing centers nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is usually sufficient. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are now opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers implementing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary monitoring. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, and the process is closely monitored, making it hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer the most accurate results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been regarded as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use due to biomarkers being ensnared within the strands during the hair’s growth cycle. When samples are obtained near the scalp, they can deliver a detection timeline of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair gathering is straightforward, moderately resistant to adulteration, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equal volume of body hair can be used instead. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process employed in laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is essential for admissibility in court. Any samples provisionally positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation for verification.

In the event of a sample returning a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than via other modalities (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notoriously challenging.

Any positive results from Screening are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing as needed. The entire lab protocol spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are quite hard to manipulate, contributing to heightened accuracy in outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can track a drug consumption pattern over time, rather than simply reflecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Poor at detecting recent usage: A time span of approximately 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests entail higher costs relative to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Excels in Rich Creek, VA: Hair follicle testing stands out over urine tests due to its superior accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
