Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shipman, Virginia. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol tests is backed by a network of testing centers across the nation, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide specialized hair testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation programs, rely on these tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain more accurate for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The hair retains a historical record of drug and alcohol usage by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hair samples are collected close to the scalp, they can indicate alcohol and drug presence for a period extending up to about 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

Approximately 200 strands of hair, measuring 1.5 inches, and gathered closest to the scalp, amount to 100mg, the preferred quantity for proper screening and verification. If conducting tests that involve EtG, additional requirements, or over 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If hair from the scalp isn't available, equivalent body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses other types such as facial and underarm hair.

Overview of the Process

The essential phases in the lab processing of drug test results comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage, incorporating the sample into the laboratory’s framework. This entails ensuring that the sample was adequately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers an economical option to dismiss potential drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be substantiated to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples initially flagging positive in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is utilized for the Extraction process. During this stage, drug traces are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other approaches like urine or saliva samples, which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Verification of any positive screening results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives undergo washing. Each stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and is compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days.
  • Resistance to tampering: The integrity of a hair test result is difficult to compromise, ensuring reliability.
  • Historical usage pattern: It maps out drug use over an extended timeframe, unlike focusing solely on recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drug detection in hair typically requires 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like individual hair growth rates and hair color can alter the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often misused, as the assay examines the hair strand, not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
