In Skyland Estates, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it’s for drugs or alcohol, we have specialized centers nationwide, adept at conducting hair tests. For valid testing, you generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can assess alcohol/ETG, drugs, or be customized for other purposes.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as the preferred method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor it over traditional urine tests. This testing method is used mainly by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary systems, and probation officers. The major advantage is its prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, gathered under strict observation, making it highly resistant to tampering. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now esteemed as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol presence by trapping biomarker indicators within the growing hair shaft. When samples are taken near the roots, they can reveal a usage history of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair. “Body hair” pertains to hair from other areas (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning phase, incorporating the sample into the lab's records. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any remaining data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening serves as the initial examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be substantiated for legal acceptance. Samples that show positive results in Screening need further validation.

For samples that test positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which renders hair drug testing a more complex process.

Confirmation follows any positive screening outcomes and is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptive for positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation as per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Wide detection range: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a much narrower detection range.
  • Tamper-resistance: Hair drug tests are very challenging to falsify, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: They offer an overview of drug use habits over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Costs: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher expenses compared to other methods.
  • Result variance: Factors such as individual hair color and growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite common references to “hair follicle tests”, it is the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp that is analyzed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
