Located in Stanley, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing and operates testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on their crown or body for testing. These tests examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers increasingly use hair follicle drug tests. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, the observed nature of the collection process, and the difficulty of falsifying results. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by entrapping biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—suitable for examination and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advise assessing the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair may suffice. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result entails four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's entry into the laboratory system, encompassing the verification of proper sealing and shipping, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of additional data entry if electronic custody is not available.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further validation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair screening as a complex methodology.

Positive Screening findings undergo Confirmation utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle embedded in the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
