Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Williamsville, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities in cities across the nation equipped to handle hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug testing in recent times. A variety of employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair tests instead of the traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is preferred by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers, primarily due to its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, making it nearly foolproof to circumvent. Yet, for identifying drug usage within the past five days, the urine test remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a significant method in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term registry of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferable. Measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale is advised. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair exclusively denote scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s framework. This stage encompasses ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective, a positive result in Screening must undergo confirmation for legal validity. Samples yielding a presumptive positive from Screening require subsequent confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positives in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drug components are isolated from hair at a concentration considerably lower than found in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring hair drug testing’s complexity.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for a duration reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more credible results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
