Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in The Plains, Virginia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we maintain testing facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Ideally, individuals should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on their head or body. Hair tests allow for analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over recent years. Many organizations, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation programs make use of these tests. The principal benefit of a hair follicle test is its extensive detection window for substance use—up to 90 days—complemented by an observed collection process that is very difficult to manipulate. For drug consumption detection within a recent 5-day window, urine tests still offer more precise readings.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term information on alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for substance and alcohol intake. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair might suffice. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a distinctive LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial rapid drug of abuse check. Although Screening is an economical method to confirm drug non-usage in most samples, any positive result necessitates Confirmation to be court-viable. Samples that presuppose a positive result in Screening indeed require further Confirmation.

Should a sample indicate positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in alternative approaches (such as urine or oral fluid); hence, hair drug analysis represents the most intricate procedure to execute.

Any affirmed positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples receive a wash before Confirmation as essential. The complete lab process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug intake stretching up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests with a constrained detection span.
  • Cheating is arduous: Manipulating a hair drug test is considerably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It traces a usage pattern over a duration, rather than capturing only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • No immediate use detection: Drugs require around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal hair growth tendencies can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
