Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Timberlake, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug screening or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head crown or body. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become increasingly common for drug assessments. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over the conventional urine analysis. Hair testing is essential for entities with strict anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and those on probation. The significant advantage is its prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, collected in a supervised setting, making it very robust against tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's fiber. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively difficult to alter, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, extra components, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be sampled, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, and similar).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary handling of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from a digital chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial brief evaluation for drug substances. Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, though a positive result must be validated to be legal in court situations. Samples that screen presumptively positive necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample screens as presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a challenging procedure to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Infeasibility to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Provides usage history: It can present a trend of drug usage over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often known as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
