Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Toga, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing spans across the nation with centers capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body hair is sufficient. These tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored for drug testing needs. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are turning to hair drug tests over standard urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies, employers, courts, and probationers utilize hair tests. Major advantages include a detection period extending to 90 days, an observed collection procedure, and high resistance to manipulation. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within its structure. Collecting hair near the scalp can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length with roughly 200 hairs (resembling a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for initial tests and confirmations. For EtG evaluations, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is advisable. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair refers to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test include four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns it a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances. Although it serves as a cost-efficient reminder against drug use for many samples, positive screenings require confirmation for legal validation. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional testing.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, extra hair from the original sample undergoes Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at concentrations lower than those found in other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair a challenging matrix for drug testing.

Confirmation of positive results is achieved using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptively positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire process, starting from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, versus shorter detection windows in urine tests.
  • Resistance to fraud: Hair tests are notably resistant to tampering, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: They reveal patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Immediate use undetectable: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and differing growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Toga, VA, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over traditional urine tests. A key benefit is the superior detection capability, with hair tests uncovering drug use over extended periods. This method also offers reliable accuracy and robustness, making it difficult to manipulate the results, ensuring employers and institutions receive accurate substance use insights.

Extended Detection Window

In Toga, VA, the hair follicle testing methodology provides a much longer detection window, capable of detecting drug use up to 90 days prior. This extended timeframe allows employers a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance use history, proving invaluable when reviewing job applicants or monitoring employee behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
