Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Union Level, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we excel in hair testing, boasting facilities in all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body are needed, capable of being evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methods have seen a rise in the adoption of hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly favor it over regular urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and people on probation due to their extended detection period, which generally spans up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended history of drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a three-month detection window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair might be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for abuse drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for it to be valid in a court setting. Any samples with presumptively positive results in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the initial Screening, more hair is drawn from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as required prior to confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a more limited detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a trend of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Clarification: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing procedure actually examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine testing in Union Level, VA? The primary reason is its unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can uncover substances over an extended period. In contrast, urine tests offer a shorter detection window. This makes hair testing a superior choice for organizations needing a comprehensive assessment of substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Union Level, VA, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This long period offers employers a thorough perspective on a person's drug use history, helping in making informed decisions. By evaluating a broader time frame, organizations gain insights into an individual's habits, thus supporting a drug-free workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
