Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Edinburg, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty is hair testing, with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence as a drug screening method. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs favor this method for its extended detection window of up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and resistance to cheating. For drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair serves as a prolonged archive for alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When samples are taken from near the scalp, they can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any further data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples indicating a positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Upon finding a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a smaller concentration level compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is particularly complex.

All positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection timelines.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Displays usage trends: It shows drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
