Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Wolf Trap, Virginia. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialized services are available across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed for effective testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific hair analysis requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a preferred method. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly opt for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Entities with no tolerance for drug use and those under probation rely on this method due to its 90-day detection window, strict observation during collection, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding markers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When hair samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal approximately a three-month history of alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equals 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the weight of the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results follows four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is integrated into the lab’s system. It involves confirming that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and entering any additional data that isn't already captured electronically.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While it’s a cost-efficient method to eliminate most negative samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples testing positive in Screening require additional Confirmation.

When a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples receive a wash before Confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wolf Trap, VA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests. With a detection window that extends up to 90 days, hair testing offers a more comprehensive analysis of substance use. Its resistance to tampering ensures accuracy, making it a more reliable choice for employers and institutions. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
