Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Brewster, Washington. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair tests is unmatched, and our facilities are available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is essential, sourced from the head or body. These assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, the method of drug assessments has increasingly turned to hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. The primary benefit is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, using a supervised collection method that's very secure. Conversely, urine tests are more exact for recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been regarded as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. Hair taken near the scalp can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, challenging to falsify, and simple to ship.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an ideal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equal amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary process of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This entails verifying the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples considered presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for confirmation of any positive screening result. All samples that test presumptive positive are washed, if necessary, prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making outcomes more reliable.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variable results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to typical urine assessments in Brewster, WA, hair testing stands out for its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair samples can track drug use over a longer duration, offering a more complete insight. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
