Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Burley, Washington. Specializing in hair testing, we offer services in numerous nationwide locations. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol hair test, accredited centers are available in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a common method. It's now preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and those on probation find these tests particularly beneficial. The primary advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collections, and difficulty in tampering. Nonetheless, for recent drug use of up to 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a timeline of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within its fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can show a history of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport, hair testing is convenient.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-thick) from near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample within a lab system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any necessary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a quick preliminary check for drug presence. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most cases, confirming a positive screen is essential for court purposes. Samples testing positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing quite challenging.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer compared to urine tests.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Insight into past use: They reveal a history of drug consumption, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and growth rates can impact metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
