Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing in Dash Point, Washington. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair testing and have locations across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing procedures. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage is its extended detection period—up to 90 days, ensuring a closely monitored collection that's hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair retains a detailed timeline of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month analysis period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional components, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into the lab’s system, confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional details not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for the majority of samples to exclude drug use, a positive screening result needs confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples indicated as positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample triggers a positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction stage, where drugs are removed from hair at much lower levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: The integrity of hair drug test results is maintained due to the difficulty in falsifying them.
  • Displays use patterns: It reveals a timeline of substance use rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become visible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color differences and individual hair growth characteristics can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Dash Point, WA, surpasses urine tests in reliability and accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair testing ensures a longer detection window, capturing substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to recent use. This makes hair tests the preferred choice for employers seeking comprehensive drug assessments in potential employees.

The precision of hair drug testing provides a broader picture of substance habits compared to urine tests, making it ideal for identifying consistent usage trends. The technique's superior detection offers employers confidence in the screening process, unlike traditional urine tests that might miss long-term drug habits.

Extended Detection Window

One standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days in Dash Point, WA. This makes it invaluable for employers who need thorough historical insight into an individual's substance use habits, covering a broader timeframe than other testing methods.

The 90-day retrospective capability of hair testing provides a comprehensive view of an employee or candidate’s behavioral patterns regarding substance use. This extended detection offers a thorough assessment, giving employers peace of mind about potential hires or current staff.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Dash Point, WA, offers a tamper-resistant solution that minimizes chances of sample adulteration, ensuring credible results. Unlike urine tests which can be manipulated, hair tests provide dependable and consistent data, securing a foolproof drug testing method for employers.

The robust nature of hair testing protects against tampering attempts, thus preserving the integrity of the results. This prevents any opportunity to alter the sample, offering unchallengeable evidence when verifying drug use against workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
