Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dieringer, Washington. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in this area and provide testing at centers across the nation, including all cities. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, but body hair might suffice. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific requirements.

In recent times, drug testing often involves the hair follicle method. Hair drug tests are increasingly preferred by employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts over the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary officers favor this approach. The key advantage is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, ensured by observed sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository for long-term usage history by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as the strand grows. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug consumption within an approximate three-month period. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) located closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For extended tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test analysis in the laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into a laboratory's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional input that isn't captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes an initial abbreviated evaluation to identify drugs of abuse. This step is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, although a positive result must undergo confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations when compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory testing protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the supervision of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection interval: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers a usage timeline: Provides a historical pattern of drug use rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
