Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Key Center, Washington. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this area and has facilities in all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is adequate. Hair analyses are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Such tests align with zero-tolerance policies at workplaces or legal obligations, providing a 90-day detection window which is nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests are optimal for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by securing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present up to about a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advocated. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the foundational handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process comprises verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial brief assessment for potential drug presence. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. All samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the preliminary sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are obtained from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Provides historical insight: It can offer a record of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the testing actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
