In Lake McMurray, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you need a drug or alcohol test that involves hair, our specialty is hair testing with centers available in cities across the nation. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or from your body. Hair testing analyzes for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine analysis. This testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and those on probation due to its extended detection timeline of up to 90 days. The collection process is monitored, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drug usage by holding biomarkers within its strands. When segments are cut near the scalp, they can offer up to an estimated three-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and validation. For tests like EtG and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It’s advisable to measure the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Here, head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the beginning steps of entering a sample into a laboratory, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary and rapid appraisal for substances of abuse. Although it effectively rules out drug use for many samples, a positive indication requires further confirmation to be legally valid. Samples indicating possible drug presence during Screening must undergo additional verification.

Samples indicating a possibility of drug presence during the Screening process necessitate extracting more hair from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction stage. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much finer concentrations compared to methods like urine or saliva testing, making hair analysis more challenging.

Confirmation for any positive result during Screening uses techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection capability.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair tests are challenging to tamper with, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical usage insights: Hair tests can unveil a drug use pattern over time, rather than capturing only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It can take around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair testing incurs more cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as the hair’s color and individual growth differences can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," these tests evaluate the hair strand itself instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
