Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Malott, Washington. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities in every city nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body are needed for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been incorporated into drug testing methods. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals now often require a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, the court system, and those on probation. They offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, involve an observed collection process, and are nearly immune to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longer-term record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both preliminary testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the introductory processing of a sample in a lab’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to discount drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally defensible. Samples that are initially positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this process, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive test result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed to be positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire process in the lab, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted with oversight from both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, making the findings more reliable.
  • Shows historical use: It offers a pattern of drug use over a longer duration, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
