For those seeking comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Southworth, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides a full array of services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialized centers nationwide, including Southworth, are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, samples are taken from 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head, although body hair can also be used. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine tests. This method is favored by firms with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and for probation conditions. A key advantage is its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days. The sample collection process is observed and secure, making it highly tamper-resistant. For recent drug use detection within five days, however, urine tests still provide accurate results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for drug and alcohol detection. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to roughly a 3-month time frame. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and substantiation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or panels over 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the lab processing of drug tests include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab’s system. This entails confirming that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial assessment for substance use. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample showing a presumptive positive in Screening requires secondary validation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample is used for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to deceive, leading to more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers insights into a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Detectable drug presence in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences may impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing in Southworth, WA, are compelling. One primary benefit is the superior detection accuracy of hair tests. Unlike urine tests, which may not detect intermittent usage or long-term patterns, hair testing provides a comprehensive drug use history over several months. This comprehensive view is crucial for employers committed to maintaining a safe and drug-free workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing stands out for its extended detection window, covering substance use up to 90 days before testing. This long-term detection period offers employers in Southworth, WA, a thorough overview of an individual's substance history, allowing for informed decisions on hiring and maintaining their workforce. This testing method provides a reliable way to gauge if an applicant or employee has engaged in recent drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Southworth, WA, is its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests that can be easily adulterated with various substances, the integrity of hair tests is maintained throughout the process. The collection is observed, making it nearly impossible to replace or contaminate the sample, thus ensuring reliable results and reducing the risk of misleading outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
