Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Virginia, Washington. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and operates testing centers across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair examinations. For most tests, hair measurements of 1.5 to 2 inches are required, which includes hair from the crown or body. These tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly become prevalent in drug testing methodologies. More businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies, legal authorities, and persons under probation because they offer an extended drug-use detection period of up to 90 days and are incredibly difficult to falsify. However, when immediate past drug use is suspected, within the last five days, urine analysis remains unmatched in precision.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month period of drug and alcohol detection. Hair sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If there is no scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab analysis of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, including checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not done by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening should undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the endorsement to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, relative to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical information: It can present a drug use pattern over a duration, extending beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Virginia, WA

Hair testing offers superior detection capabilities over urine tests, capturing drug use more effectively. While urine tests provide a shorter detection window, hair follicle tests extend up to 90 days, ensuring that prior substance use doesn't go unnoticed. This makes hair testing a valuable tool for employers keen on maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Moreover, with higher accuracy and reliability, hair follicle tests minimize the risk of false negatives or positives, which can sometimes occur in urine tests. This makes them a more reliable choice for thorough substance testing requirements.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Virginia, WA

The hair follicle testing method offers an extensive detection window, stretching up to three months. This long-term overview enables employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, proving essential for assessing prospective or current employees' reliability.

Utilizing this broader detection period, organizations can better gauge patterns in drug use that may otherwise remain hidden with conventional testing, safeguarding workplace standards and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Virginia, WA

The robustness of hair follicle tests lies in their resistance to sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, which can be adulterated, hair testing offers a more secure process. These tests significantly reduce the potential for fraud, presenting results that are difficult to question.

For employers and legal entities, this reliability in hair follicle testing ensures the accuracy and authenticity of results. By eliminating the possibility of cheating, they provide peace of mind that the findings are genuine and trustworthy.
