Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bradley, West Virginia. Whether it's a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair screening, with facilities spread across all Nationwide cities capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed on the crown, or body hair can be used. Hair screenings can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle screenings. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. These tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extended drug detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, with a supervised collection method that is nearly foolproof. Despite this, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an essential method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by enclosing biomarkers in the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can present nearly a three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, it's best to have 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it strictly pertains to scalp hair. Body hair alludes to all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab’s system. It includes confirming that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data entry not supplemented by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening step, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than in alternative techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are purified before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can reveal drug intake for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine analyses which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenges with deception: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical information: It can display a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days after drug consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and unique discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the testing evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
