In Danville, WV, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug tests. If you're seeking a hair alcohol or drug analysis, our specialty is hair testing, with centers across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. This test screens for drugs and alcohol/ETG among other customizable options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing is becoming more common than ever. Many employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists are favoring hair analyses over the typical urine screenings. This type of test is favored by employers upholding zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The advantage lies in its extended detection period up to 90 days, taken in a monitored setting, making it very hard to fake. Yet, for detecting recent drug usage within five days, the urine test remains unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. The hair captures biomarkers within the fibers as it grows, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption. When cut near the scalp, hair samples can reveal up to a 3-month history for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

An ideal sample involves a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp, yielding about 100mg—optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to gather 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to ensure proper specimen weight. Absent scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry that isn’t already part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be affirmed to be court-admissible. Samples recognized as presumptively positive during Screening need a further validation.

For presumptive positives found during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and designated for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from the hair at a reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any preliminary positive results undergoes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS testing. Presumptive positives are washed as required before confirmation. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test makes its results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of continued drug use over time, unlike tests focusing solely on recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Near-term use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days after use to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Though often named "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Danville, WV, hair follicle testing is preferred over urine testing for its thorough detection capabilities. Hair tests offer a broader detection spectrum, identifying drug use accurately over more extended periods than urine tests can. This method ensures a deeper understanding of substance use patterns.
The accuracy of hair tests in detecting drug usage is unmatched.

Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle analyses provide reliable insight into a user’s history of drug exposure. Their sophisticated detection mechanism captures a comprehensive history, offering better compliance with stringent workplace policies. This improves workplace integrity and trust without the typical pitfalls of short-sighted urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Danville, WV, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, identifying drug usage over a more significant timeframe, as long as 90 days. This provides employers with a clear view of an individual's substance use history before making employment decisions.
Hair tests are unsurpassed in providing a detailed timeline of substance use.

Employers benefit greatly from hair follicle tests, as they can surface long-term drug use patterns not detectable in shorter testing windows. By offering insights into prolonged use, these tests serve as a valuable tool for ensuring workplace safety and informed hiring practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
