Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Moundsville, West Virginia. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers operate nationwide, ready to perform hair tests in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of the head; alternatively, body hair can be used. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often require hair drug testing instead of traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation programs utilize hair follicle drug testing due to its extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days. This observed testing process makes cheating nearly impossible, although urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term use history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol presence over an approximate 3-month period. Gathering hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The crucial phases in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary introduction of a sample into the lab’s system. This process checks that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for largely negating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires validation for legal acceptability. Samples presumed positive in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should Screening denote a presumptively positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to different methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing complex and challenging.

Analytical Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo cleansing before necessary confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is regulated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Alteration resistance: The difficulty in altering a hair drug test renders results more dependable.
  • Historical usage insight: It reveals drug consumption patterns over an extended period, rather than immediate use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drug presence in hair is noticeable only after about 5–7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the exam analyzes the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
